  What is Rebus Touring Arts?

Who is Dante?

A multi-disciplined arts company comprising Actors, Film-makers, Musicians, Dancers, Fashion Designers and Fine Artists. It was put together in 2006 as an ensemble to tour and perform in front of live audiences - in a sense going back to the origins of 'real' theatre, taking the performance to the people.

Dante Alighieri born in Florence 1265.
Considered as Italy 's greatest poet

His greatest piece "The Divine Comedy" composed during his political exile from Florence recounts the tale of the poet's journey through hell, purgatory, and heaven. In hell and purgatory, Dante is guided by Virgil - and through heaven, by Beatrice, for who the poem is a memorial.

"La Vita Nuova" written 1292, before the Divine Comedy, is an autobiographcal collection of prose & lyrics celebrating Beatrice and illustrating his idealistic concept of love. This is a very moving account of his unobtainable muse Beatrice whom he fell in love with at first sight. His emotional and physical helplessness upon only meeting her 3 times in his lifetime, is penned in the beautiful poetry of La Vita Nuova.

The first production will be Dante's "La Vita Nuova" (new life). The company's aim is to encourage collaboration between the various disciplines within the arts, weaving together the drama of theatre, the graceful motion of dance, the evocative magic of music and film, and with the colour and multi-layered beauty of fine art, all placed in a modern contemporary setting.

Why Rebus?
The company is called 'Rebus' which in Latin means 'Picture Puzzle' and was also taken from a title of a painting by American Artist, Robert Rauschenberg - himself having worked on many collaborative projects in particular Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown dance companies which included musician/artist John Cage in the 50's and 60's touring the world.
