Profile
Stephen Dydo is a composer, guitarist, and player of the Chinese qin. He has written for virtually all musical media. His compositions include many vocal and choral works, as well as various combinations of instrumental and electronic media. Among the organizations performing his works are the New Calliope Singers, Group for Contemporary Music, Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, Composers' Conference, Lenox Arts Center, League of Composers-ISCM, Stichting Combinatie van Utrechtse Muziekbelangen, etc. His awards have included the Bearns Prize, a BMI award, a Fulbright fellowship, and Meet the Composer grants. He has recently written a number of pieces for Asian musicians using 8th century sources; these have been performed in New York, Cambridge, Berlin, Taipei and London. In addition, he has premiered many new works for the guitar and was a featured qin soloist in the Second Annual Jiangsu Qin Conference in 2002 in Suzhou and has performed in many solo concerts in New York, and at the Sevenoaks Music Festival in England; in 2006, he presented his electric qin in performance in Beijing.

Dydo’s involvement with the music of Dante’s time goes back many years, when he presented it in concerts of new music. His connection with collaborative work goes back to the 1970's, when he was John Cage's assistant. He is currently collaborating with the painter Susan Haire. They are working on two projects: one, riverrun, is a reflection on the power of water as described in Chinese painting and music; the other is directly influenced by their involvement with the La Vita Nuova project, which they will show in late 2007.
