For five years I have been working on 'Mixed Media Books', incorporating poems and sonnets by mainly British writers who travelled the 'Grand Tour' to Italy . Among the poets included were; Lord Byron, Robert Browning and Oscar Wilde.
Each Work is, as it were a book, and lies open at the centre pages, I apply my own range of mixed media to the whole book object using found materials, text, photographic stills, handmade paper, fabric, resin, gold leaf and paint, the process of building layer upon layer of different elements brings to each work a sense not only of its apparent surface but everything that is obscured beneath, itself a metaphor for time present and past.
My influences are both contemporary and historical, Bill Viola's Video 'The Greeting' (based on a 15 th Century fresco by Florentine artist Pontormo) and Masaccio's frescoes in the Braccacci Chapel in Florence

The company is called 'Rebus' which in Latin means Picture Puzzle and was also taken from a title of a painting by American Artist, Robert Rauschenberg himself having worked on many collaborative projects in particular Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown dance companies which included musician/artist John Cage in The 50's and 60's touring the world.
This production will tour the UK and Europe performing at Literary and Arts festivals. Together with the production we will create a Web-site which will be totally interactive, creating forums, expressing and articulating one's notion of 'Love' in all its manifestations within the context of 'Today'. The web-site will also profile all the artists within the ensemble and all the festivals that we visit, with many different and imaginative links, plus we will be adopting and profiling some charities .
There will be a touring catalogue published in conjunction with the web-site. The Web-site and Catalogue will be integral components of the project. |
More recently I have been working on a series of 'Book works' based on Dante's 'La Vita Nuova' which is a very moving account of his lifelong unobtainable muse Beatrice whom he fell in love with at first sight. His emotional and physical helplessness upon only meeting her three times in his and her short life is penned in the beautiful poetry of La Vita Nuova.
For this series of Artworks I employed two actors to assume their identities, dressed in thirteen century costumes I photographed them creating a series of filmic stills, the photos were then collaged onto the books.
The notion of collaboration has become an integral aspect of my work, working with poets and songwriters such as Peter Sarstedt, who handwrote for me his lyrics 'Where do you go to my lovely' which became a focal point to a series of works. So this sense of strong collaboration with other artists working within different disciplines and by my work taking a more theatrical feel' this seemed to me to be a great progression enabling me to work with and alongside 'Artists' to realise a theatrical production. So the Rebus Touring Arts Company was formed.
The Company comprises of Actors, Film-makers, Musicians, Dancers, Fashion Designers and Fine Artists. It has been put together as an ensemble to tour and perform in front of live audiences. The first production will be 'La Vita Nuova( new life).
Weaving together the drama of theatre, the graceful motion of dance, the evocative magic of music and film and the colour and multi-layered beauty of fine art all placed in a modern contemporary setting. |
